There is an urgent need to integrate ‘aquascapes’ into landscape ecology to ensure successful management of the whole landscape and the effective protection and management of the freshwater ecosystems. The aim of this conference was to bring about the integration of the disciplines of freshwater and landscape ecology, to encourage the consideration of all types of waterbody and their interactions with landscapes.
The keynote speaker was Professor Steve Ormerod. Other speakers were from organisations including RSPB, CEH, Wildlife Trusts and academic institutions and included many international speakers. Conference delegates included planners, practitioners, national and local government bodies, researchers and NGOs.
The conference was broken into key themes including:
- People, water and the landscape
- Pattern, process and its analysis
- Issues and Challenges for the freshwater landscape, including planning for agricultural landscapes
- Planning for waterbodies at the landscape scale
Evening activites included a Poster session with drinks reception, a Ceilidh and a tour of Oxford's historic pubs.
